How to become a dental assistant?
I researched it a little bit but i want personal feedback! Should I start out as a dental assistant right out of high school and then become a dental hygienist? Are there any programs I could attend while still in high school? Should I go to dental assistant school before I become one? Any information about Dental Assistants and Hygienists is good! thank you!
If you planning to become a dental hygienist, I would recommend just trying to get a job at a dental office. This will give you some experience which dental hygiene programs will like. You can answer phones or assist. There are a couple of ways to become an assistant. One is dental assisting school and the other is to just do general certificate classes after starting work at the dental office. It varies from state to state, but normally it is either a weekend class or a written test taken at the office. Dental hygiene schools like to see you know what you are getting into and some actually require so many months of experience.

I just started school for assisting myself. Like the previous poster said you (usually) don’t need to be certified to work as one but going to school is not a bad thing. I know at the school I go to however they graduate a very limited amount of hygienists and if you don’t have all your prereqs and dental assisting done your chances of getting in are considerably slimmer.

I am a DH. Go to dental assisting school first. enroll in a community college (not a private training place) that offers a certificate in DA. They take some of the same courses as DH and you have a better chance of getting into a DH program at that same college if you do their DA course. The DA course is about 1 year. And you can work right after you graduate and make great money.
